The schools made it a policy to never fail a child and always advance them. This kid got so far behind, the school didn't care. Actually, the schools put him on an IEP, which removes his testing scores from their state assessments, and it gets them more dollars. It behooves the schools to put the failing kids on IEPs.
My children all are musicians, all dance, all can be thrown in the middle of the woods and find their way to safety and eventually to home. They can raise animals (I haven't figured out gardening, I'm just bad at it...). They can talk about each amendment, the founding of America. They are all athletes with the city baseball / softball / basketball leagues, and all have friends they regularly hang out with. They go horseback riding weekly. My 6th grader does high school algebra and geometry. With his yearly standardize test (yes, we have to do those, too), my 6th grader is already averaging above a high school senior. This isn't because he's any kind of superstar... it's because public education is so poor that a 6th grader who is kept on task and is challenged can out perform an average senior.
The point of homeschooling is to get the GED (well, there's more than that). Once your child is able to pass the GED and actually get their GED, then they can move on to college or whatever. We may try to have our 6th grader get his GED in a couple years at the age of 13 or 14.
Public school systems are disastrous. If you can figure out a way to homeschool, your child will be sheltered from the culture rot. Homeschooling these days is nothing at all like it was 20 years ago. The amount of resources, activities, etc. geared toward homeschooling is amazing.
