There is going to be an accident that kills 500+ people, and will cripple the airline industry. These people can’t speak English, can’t communicate with ATC, can’t do basic math, and they can barely fly a coherent pattern, in a 180hp plane.
There is a massive wave of retirements, coming up, and these walking disasters will be filling their spots. Do not be deceived; every airline, from regional to legacy, employs these hiring practices. To a further point, the airlines are in such a stranglehold to the unions, it will be impossible to weed them out, until they kill someone.

I used to teach instrument flying on an AATD to pilots with fresh PPL. None of them could navigate via VOR or read a magnetic compass. They were helpless on compass directions and headings. But they were all very good at DIRECT TO on a GPS.
Flying a sim using only a six pack should be a mandatory qualifying test.
The general trend in partial panel skills is an absolute disaster. These people come in, and they are wizzes with a G1000 or 3000, but they can’t track inbound on a radial, or execute a 30 degree compass turn.
We’re training people to play computer games, not fly planes. They’re slipping and skidding everywhere, they can’t create coherent flight plans, and they can’t fly by the seat of their pants. Even the big boys don’t do a ton of actual flying. They fly the first few minutes of a departure, the last few of an approach, and unless they fly their own GA planes, they don’t do a whole lot of other flying, until they go in for recurrent.
One of my former students went on to be captain on CRJ for American (PSA), and now FO on 737 for United.
I gave him 20 hours sim for IR and 50 hours sim for COM; during those 50 hours (in an A36 Bonanza config) he had an ASI for only 5 hours -- he learned to fly by the numbers very well, also without AI much of the time.
That is very good instruction. I think that we should instruct instrument similar to multi-engine, with 50% of your available technology, or less, available, much of the time.
