Elon is going on a rampage against Apple, they dropped their ads on Twitter and are threatening removal from App Store ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ (twitter.com)

one thing that needs to be done regulation-wise is DECOUPLE the "app stores" from the devices. There shouldn't be an "official app store" for Android or Apple. Use whichever phone you want but you shouldn't be bound to only getting apps from where the manufacturer of the phone or phone OS says you're allowed to. It shouldn't be baked into the phone OS. the manufacturer of the OS should have NO control over the apps installed on the phone.

They can have an official store for apps that have been vetted by staff, but they should allow downloading of anything

You can still install APKs on Android (with caveats), and you can still use 3rd party app stores like F-Droid.

It's not ideal but it's not the same as Apple. If you want to install something yourself on iOS you still need XCode.

I could be wrong, but I think you have to put your Android device in "developer mode" to install APKs, which 99.9% of normies aren't going to do.

permalink parent save report block reply

You don't. You just need to toggle "install unknown apps" for the app you used to download the APK. Or, optionally, your file browser.

If they do drop the Twitter app... Elon should sue.

There were more issues with the past regime and we're allowed to stay.

Only once the politics changed do they have a want to block twitter.

It would hinder a multi billion dollar company if Apple was allowed to block the Twitter app.

There should be a choice of app stores. The people running the store should approve the apps. You can have your liberal bullshit app store with only Approved Messaging, or you can have an app store that makes sure none of the apps are malicious but generally has apps uncensored.

Unless something as changed, Android does let you do that. You just enable 3rd party apps in settings, and you can download them.

If you allow a market to be monopolized, then the government will not be able to resist the temptation to interfere it. Monopolies are explicitly anti-republican. You cant have them and a functioning society of free people at the same time.

Even worse.. most politicians only care about the "efficiency" argument, they never understand the "labor" portion of the argument. If there are only a handful of employers in your sector, you're far less likely to be a whistleblower or to expose wrongdoing. You're just as tied to the monopoly as the government is.

This is a huge back door problem in our system.

If a developer wants to get an iphone app on the app store, they need to go through all sorts of hoops, it needs reviewed by apple, they need to be able to test it, etc... they go through a review process, tell you what you have to fix (and not necessarily bugs, it could be anything the tester doesn't like)... they may say "well, this app doesn't give much more functionality than the actual website." Literally, they will block your native iphone app if you simply take the website and display it in the app... you have to have additional features.

Android, on the other hand, allows developers to release an app to the app store and, provided it's not totally egregious, publish it to the google play store and then let the community sort out if it's a good app or not. Android is far better in these aspects than apple because apple is a bunch of communists who want complete control.

Youโ€™re mistaken. The app was done for something like six months and Android refused to put it in the App Store. Samsung put it on their own App Store months before Android finally gave in as the last holdout.

Nothing about android is any better for freedom than what apple does. Theyโ€™re both ridiculously corrupt and biased, and both are equally weaponized.

If the people at Truth are so fucking retarded as to not provide an APK on their website, then the app isn't worth downloading anyway.

You don't need an app store on Android. That's an apple meme.

– panthicc 1 point 117 days ago +1 / -0

Interesting, didn't know that about the Google app store, though not terribly surprised. I wonder why Truth didn't just provide the APK for Android users.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the android code though, it's open source so theoretically Elon could use a fork of it to develop his own OS. No arguments here about Google properties being just as evil as Apple products though.

False. Android is open-source. You can use an open-source version if you desire. And then you can do anything you want.

Even on closed-source variants, you can usually download apps from elsewhere.

Android =/= Google Play

▲ 1 ▼
– Taco_of_Kiev 1 point 117 days ago +1 / -0

Yes, you can root some devices depending on how much they lock down the boot loader and then push a new third party ROM onto the phone. 99% of Android users lack the technical capability to do so and probably fewer are in a position to buy (let alone know about) alternatives. All that makes arguing the edge case somewhat disingenuous.

Caveat: I havenโ€™t rooted an Android device in years, so it is plausible that there is an easier way, but even a few years ago the rooting community was rather small and dwindling.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– BringTheCat789 2 points 117 days ago +2 / -0

99% of Android users lack the technical capability to do so.

I wouldn't say 99%. That leaves only 1/100 people that use Android that you think can look up an article to root their phone. It's more than that.

But, moreover, there are loads of black guys on Facebook marketplace who will root your phone for $20. (if they don't steal it)

Arguing the edge case is disingenuous

You're missing my point. My point is that the problem isn't with Android, it's with the general public and how they choose to use Android. If you want to blame a company, it's the phone manufacturers and cellular carriers who put these closed-source variants on their phone, not Android.

These details matter. It matters who we're assigning blame to. And it matters how we can fix it. In particular, we don't need to fix it by redesigning a new phone OS from the ground up... because Android isn't the problem. We need to fix it by getting real Android on the common man's phone.

rooting

By the way, you don't always need to root to download and install an app not on the Play store. Which was the main point I was making. But this isn't due to a lack of technical knowledge, it's due to a lack of convenience. Most people could figure it out quickly if they wanted to, but it's not important enough for them to bother straying from the Play store.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– thisguy883 1 point 117 days ago +1 / -0

Now a days, rooting a device is not needed.

The only real reason you would root your phone is if you have a custom ROM. That's pretty much it. Even then, most people don't need even that.

Coming from someone who would always root their android phones; once I started using Samsung devices, I haven't needed to root or install a custom ROM in a very long time. Their stock OS is actually really nice and I love their encrypted "Secure folder".

I can even put my phone on a USB C dock and use it as a desktop with Samsung DEX.

In short, I've never been impressed with iPhone. It just "looks" cool. Functionally, it's not worth it.

Anything and everything you do on an android phone is sent back to Google for monetization. You have to fully root your phone and sideload a whole custom OS if you want even a trace of privacy, but with an IMEI and HWID any privacy claim is a boldfaced lie. Android is arguably worse than Apple because Apple at least says they wonโ€™t sell your information (Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™re lying, but Google doesnโ€™t even pretend).

Based, honestly.

I hate when companies and people think they need an "app" for everything they do.

Your web browser has been in development for decades to abstract all sorts of common code. And then you download an app that does all that same shit just to display one specific website.

I am totally fine with Apple vetting apps for technical reasons like this. It's when they start vetting apps for hate speech and such that it becomes a problem. Also, there should be an easy way to download unvetted apps for those who wish to.

I kind of hate the whole 'app" thing, though. I use my phone as little as possible, and am in front of a computer all day for work. I hate that companies like Comcast are making it impossible to reach them and force you to use an app. I hate phone culture, and app culture is central to it. I also don't use Twitter, so I don't care about their app. They censor more than Apple does, or used to, or so it seems. Hell, everyone was censoring us during the Coof bullshit.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Trump-16-20-24-28-32 1 point 117 days ago +1 / -0

I wouldn't say it's 'based.'

So, because you hate when companies create an "app" for what they do, you think they should not allow it and only do vetted apps? That's not 'based' at all... that's authoritarian.

'Based' would be allowing any applications on their platform (provided it's not doing something illegal).

Heck, 'based' would even be saying 'they are a private business, they can do with their platform what ever they want...' I can get behind this much more. But then again, Apple is such a massive platform and accessible to the public that I don't necessarily agree the should be able to pick and choose based on their own whims.

You bring up an interesting point... I think it's unfair to essentially have a "blue checkmark" for vetted apps. I know you didn't say 'blue checkmark,' but having a 'vetted' and 'unvetted' set of apps kind of gets the same thing across. All the sudden, there will be valid applications that cannot get the special blue checkmark as 'vetted' because Apple doesn't like something about them. This seems wrong.

Because you hate when companies create an "app" for what they do, you think they should not allow it

Like I said, there should be an alternative, but still accessible, app store for unvetted apps.

That's not 'based' at all... that's authoritarian

Banning homosexuality is based and authoritarian.

"blue checkmark" for apps

This would be a decent system. But, like any system, it has potential to be exploited. It is possible to have systems that can eventually be exploited, but keep them in check so they aren't. It just requires constant oversight by the public.

The reality is that until we can convince people to care, they will be able to do bullshit no matter what the laws say or don't say. And once we get people to care, it won't matter what the laws say or don't say because they'll be able to vote with their dollar again.

Downloading an "app" that does the exact same thing a website does should just make a bookmark link on your phone. There is no reason for such a thing to exist, it is entirely redundant.

Just think about how many apps get downloaded regularly that are literally just a website. Those have to be stored, updated, pushed to users... Useless bloat.

Tech giants Like Microsoft did not really contribute to political parties in the 90's. It wasn't until they were being hit with anti-trust lawsuits did they start contributing for protection.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/tech-industry/microsoft-political-donations-seen-as-trial-ploy/

The Microsoft donations, a 20-fold increase over 1996, are part of a strategy to curry favor with lawmakers in general, and the GOP in particular, analysts say, in the belief that a Republican president would be more eager to settle the antitrust case without the breakup ordered by a U.S. judge.

He also 100% has the ability to make a superior cell phone and destroy the other cell phone companies. Apple hasn't done shit since Jobs passed away in terms of innovation. He could also do something like offer a 10% fee on apps not the insane 30% they are charging now.

If you were there, you'd understand what the September that didn't end refers to.

In quick form, September would (and still) mark a time when a lot of new computers would appear on the Internet as students going to college and people going to work started using their new systems.

Of course, a lot of these people wouldn't understand the ins and outs of how discourse on the Internet worked at the time and so would swamp networks with inane questions and poor behaviour.

Early on, these people would eventually get the hang of how things worked and eventually the net would return to 'normal'.

The September that never ended was when so many people showed up (AOL was a big perpetrator here) that the way online discourse worked was changed forever.

It's seen as a tipping point for the commercialisation of the Internet and where it really started to become what it is today.

Which was never meant for the unwashed masses. They had to be content with Win 9x and ME. Win XP was just far enough from the NT family line (even though it was part of it) to be so different.

Win 2000 was good because it dragged NT kicking and screaming into some form of modernity. Of course, NT was better than Win 9x because it so openly stood on the ashen corpse of OS/2, and robbed freely from OpenVMS (to the point that Microsoft paid DEC up to $100million out of court to shut everyone up). At one point it even had a proper POSIX API available / usable within it.

There were many issues with NT and that family of systems, particularly with security authentication and proper multi user support for many years, but it has become the bulwark of Microsoft's OS offerings since the turn of the millenium.

Not at all if you look at it holistically. Consistant and sane UI useable by both pros and amateurs, very stable, amazing hardware and software support, Visual Studio was still decent since MS hadn't gone down the .NET rabbit hole yet.

Apple no longer has the capability to do shit. WWDC presenters are nothing but troons and diversity hires. Their attempt to move away from Cocoa into SwiftUI has been a complete shitshow, and Chrome is putting pressure on them to properly support PWAs in Safari which will further make the app store even less compelling as it already is. Swift was a giant fucking mistake and they haven't shipped a decent OS since SnowLeopard.

Same. I still have my personal MacBook Pro from 2010 running 10.6.8. That was the last OS Steve Jobs approved before he passed. I have not upgraded it. Runs perfectly, can count on one hand the number of times it has crashed. And I use it for hardcore numerical calculations for my astrophysics research.

My work MacBook Pro has crashed dozens of times in the few months I have owned it and I don't yet use it for any research, just lightweight stuff.

Apple is trash now.

I used to absolutely adore the MacOS, but Iโ€™m really starting to hate it these days, and Iโ€™ve been using it since the public betas that I had to hack to work on my Power Mac 9500 with a G4 upgrade card.

Theyโ€™ve turned it into โ€œiOS Desktopโ€ and it sucks. I miss the days when I got on my computer and it functioned like a computer, not some computer/portable hybrid.

Itโ€™s like they looked at Microsoftโ€™s mistake with Windows 10, when they put a tablet OS on the desktop, and said โ€œhey, letโ€™s copy that!โ€ Itโ€™s awful.

Agreed, the direction of MacOS has been a massive disappointment. I was really hyped about the iPad and iPhone, I thought that with the move to offload casual users onto dedicated devices would free Apple up to move MacOS in more of a BeOS direction, still user-friendly but with great dev power just under the hood. Instead like you say they turned it into iOS desktop edition. Potentially awesome features like TimeMachine and Automator just languish while instead we just keep getting reskinned versions of Notes.

It has serious performance issues for what should be simple things, The xcode previews are still glitchy as fuck, the CoreData providers that are supposed to work with the Combine framework basically don't work, and you still need to reach into Cocoa to do anything more complicated than a simple button.

But on a deeper level, the whole idea is fundamentally flawed. They tried to make a single declarative framework that would reach from iWatch to iMac, and it just doesn't work, the platforms are too different.

The true shame is that Cocoa was great and was still great, and Apple had been making serious progress with both Cocoa and Objective-C. However they were feeling the pressure from the popularity of React and decided to chase the whole functional UI paradigm to court web devs without realizing that the reason functional UIs are popular in the browser is because the DOM is a dumpster fire and that the problems they solve in the browser dont' exist in native UI toolkits.

Although, I'm not sure how a satellite phone would work in a building... I could see there being some kind of encrypted mesh network of Elon phones. That would be kind of cool.

Starlink's fast and low satellites aren't as capable of being locked onto as easily as Iridium. You need a dish to get service. Now Musk just did a partnership with tmobile to link up with Starlink, so he could put out his own cell phone and set up agreements like that around the world.

Well his fame and wealth scored him new organs well ahead of more deserving people on the transplant list. Had he not been such a holistic asshole, perhaps he'd still be drawing breath.

But, a lot of the tech Apple put out under his command (after his return from his Pepsi-forced exile) was because of that. Him being an holistic asshole. It was one of the few tech companies left where the success was so strongly tied to the founder.

Microsoft has become a behemoth that has survived the departure of Gates, Allen, and Ballmer. Oracle is such a nightmare that I don't think it matters if Larry Ellison is still alive. Google is Google, so the founders may as well not exist. Unfortunately, Compaq and HP didn't really survive after their founders left. And Intel might have come a little closer than it wanted. And then there's all the companies Microsoft squished along the way (and Electronic Arts if you're looking at computer gaming companies).

The worst part is there is a "Portable Web App" specification. For a few extra lines of JavaScript on your website, you can just turn your website into a pre-packaged app that lives on the phone mostly the way other apps do. You even get access to notifications and all that.

There is literally zero reason, outside of direct hardware access, that anything needs to be an actual app store distributed app these days.

I think it would be good if he used one of the Linux phones that have been attempted. They have good potential but need fine tuning. They have been semi-developed and might just need a relatively small amount of big business investment to make a leap. Unfortunately I think the main problem is they won't look "slick". May be a few mm too wide for Apple cultists, and not have posh styling.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– War_Hamster 1 point 117 days ago +1 / -0

I demand posh styling.

I'd think all of the talented independent coders out there would create a pretty robust ecosystem on a platform like that relatively quickly, no?

How secure could this become?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– AJoeDD 2 points 117 days ago +2 / -0

I think there would be massive advantages from open source participation too. I can't evaluate security since it's out of my field, though my guess is it would have equivalent security at minimum (with less staff costs than Apple/Google). Some other Pede will know the answer and I'd like to see thoughts on it too.

If we assume the advantages of Linux OS on PCs translate to phone, that would mean more stability over updates (and no need to constantly buy new phones) and better security. The biggest benefit is probably not using a bunch of data and resources for builtin spyware of Apple/Google.

I've been using a Linux desktop for PC after Windows rebooted during an overnight run of an algorithm that had been going for over a day already, ignoring my selection of when to allow updates. I had turned them off for the week, but it chose to just override me and say "fuck your work, take these frivolous updates for something you may never use" for the last time. When they started their terrible Win10 updates originally I remember they used to have a weekly update recur when I needed to make a report and get it submitted. Fun times. Just about everything is better in Linux and most of the transition was easy.

I use a OS that is styled in the Apple OS design (small app bar in the bottom center and so on), but it looks better than Apple. Required minor customization effort. It is posh, at least internally. On the outside it looks like a Windows device and isn't thin enough to slice vegetables like a Mac. But hey, I have about 5x the hardware power I'd have with a laptop like that. I'm skeptical that for phones any type of exterior Apple-equivalent design is feasible. Tesla could make a better looking and performing phone, but I doubt they can at a competitive price. You'd need to compete with the Chinese slave labor Apple gets, and at that point you'd also become obligated to follow CCP censorship rules. Perhaps the best hope in that regard is having Apple themselves lose their slave labor access, as it appears they may be in risk of.

Apple didn't have a problem with twitter hosting tons of CP. Now they have a problem? OKAY GROOMERS, message received.

I've been seeing a lot of Apple ads on the twitter app this morning. I think they are overcompensating right now and buying up a ton of impressions to avoid further bad publicity.

After my "upgrade" to ios 16, I am convinced that apple is going down the tubes. What was once an almost bug free experience has become a near constant string of pretty serious issues. Not the least of which is the fucking thing doesn't receive calls! They just go to VM without even ringing my phone. Turns out there's some catastrophic bug with using "wifi calling" that they've yet to even acknowledge.

There's half a dozen other pretty big bugs and frustrating UX issues that have come up in ios16, but it is quite telling. No previous apple OS has been this problematic since the days of the Power Mac.

If Musk can kill Twitter AND Apple, that would be awesome. I'd forgive the electric car bullshit.

But not the brain chips.

The car seems cool and fun, but impractical for lots of traditional uses. Also the claims of environmental impact seem dubious.

Tesla phones better be open sourced and free (as in freedom) to everyone in order to make any use of it, at all.

Not just like android. But in order to function and people see what is based upon, it needs to function like it otherwise it's not going to be better than any other big company's OS.

People need to mentally change how they use their device, otherwise they will repeatedly trap themselves over and over again.

This is such a bummer for me. I use apple stuff for work and always have. Creativity used to rule for them, but the woke is now overwhelming. Go to the "browse" page of Apple Music, and it's 90% black artists - Young This, Lil That - EVERY TIME. Plus the random country artist (?). Look at their advertising; apparently everyone in america is a skinny light skinned black chick with freckles and bell bottomed jeans.

This all comes from advertising people. Woke sheep, deep in debt, even if they didn't agree personally, they would still make the same decisions because they are fear based and compromised. A perfect system.

GO ELON GO

It apparently doesn't have a few functions that for some reason cannot be installed unless going through the app stores. I don't want that, but for a significant amount of users it's a big deal. The inconveniences are enough for the app stores to hold enough of app user bases hostage for Twitter and most others.

I hope Apple is ready to settle out of court for a billion for Torturous Interference which will then fund a new cellphone that will compete with the iPhone.

Because that's the play.

You know what's total bullshit about this whole thing is that apps are not even needed. You can get all the functionality of an app by using HTML5 and a browser on your phone.

They force apps down your throat because an app remains in the memory when you're not using it and that's how they track all the shit you do day and night. Loading a site on a browser though that only tracks you while you're on the site. The second you close the browser they can no longer spy on you while you're on the toilet or wherever.

Elon has a chance here to wake people up to that fact but the stock for Twitter would probably go down even more if he made the developers create a mobile site that does more than tell you to go download the fucking app.

I keep saying this, Elon is a valuable ally to have. Even if we only overlap in our values by 50 or 60%, itโ€™s better than the ZERO overlap we have with leftists.

We want Elon in our corner. Letโ€™s keep it that way.
