I've actually worked on a dam, hanging from ropes with high-pressure water blasting equipment to rough up the surface for new concrete. Not a huge one like Grand Coulee, which I've been to a few times, but the Spokane Upriver one managing flow from Coeur d'Alene lake. The disrespect for those who have put their lives on the line, or worse yet, lost theirs building and maintaining them is sickening. Their motives for doing so will surely be another reason they will burn in Hell.

Basically, they are trying to thirst the farmers out of business. Most of water goes to the ocean. Just ask the socialist in SF if they want destroy dams that feeds into their area. It’s a resounding “NOPE”.

Funny how Hetch Hetchy is dammed by the 430-foot-tall O'Shaughnessy Dam and supplies 2.7 million people in SF. Lets do this one first.

They need more room to stuff in illegals in cali so they are doing their best to drive out as many americans as they can since even hellhole cali is better than hellhole central or south america. Every house they free up is worth dozens of future votes or even more as they fill them with migrant families.

Devin Nunez has talked about this at length for years. The aquifer system is supposed to fill during wet years so they can draw from it during dry years. The government has been draining it instead and creating a constant drought.

wind is also "zero emissions", its a shitlib buzzword that doesnt mean it isnt polluting

10
anatidaephobia 10 points ago +10 / -0

The difference is that a dam that is already existing is eventually integrated into the landscape, the surrounding ecosystems adapts to the change. Removing the dam doesn't restore the ecosystem, it's gonna take decades and affect everything downstream.

Wind turbines is just trash, they destroy and consume more energy than they'll ever produce during it's lifetime.

"Zero emissions" was always a buzzword, nothing is truly free from emissions. Life itself causes emissions, that's just something we have to accept. And normies believing in that bullshit must be reminded about the forest, coral reef and everything else that takes care and "neutralize" those emissions, before they do something retarded, like voting green.

8
BoughtByBloomberg2 8 points ago +8 / -0

How does a dam pollute? It literally is nothing but a physical barrier to stop water from leaving a reservoir below a certain water level.

7
Zepp87 7 points ago +7 / -0

Routing the water potentially fucks up other areas. Poorly made or maintained dams can sleep in to the water (rust, concrete).

Very, very little pollution from dams.

5
BoughtByBloomberg2 5 points ago +5 / -0

I agree that a poorly planned dam can have disastrous down stream consequences. But all you need to do to fix that is to just lower the water level threshold.

1
BidenLikesMiners 1 point ago +1 / -0

they can cause blooms of algae that wouldnt naturally occur in the river, and large temperature differences, that can effect the wildlife in the stream, or even prevent it from spawning there anymore. it can also make it more difficult for various animals to have habitats out of washed down sticks and other stuff that naturally gets carried in these environments.

And for the fishers here, at the location of one of the PNW dams, the wild fish population was reduced by nearly 85% over the time of the dam being there.

Now what is the direct pollution impact of one? they can cause more emissions by destroying forestland around the feeder part of the lake. that lowers that areas ecosystem's ability to absorb greenhouse gases, by building up a huge reservoir at the mouth of the dam, it increases the differences in temperature from the bottom and the top of the stream, while the bottom stays cold, the top gets much hotter than it normally would, and can cause a lot more of the stream to evaporate, instead of flowing down the rest of the length, carrying sediment and other nutrients to help the local biome grow, including the fish populations, and some animals that might find shelter near, or food from, said streams.

It can also reduce the amount of water naturally available downstream, harming farming populations that don't utilize factory farming products. And sometimes the water becomes unusable.

They can also cause increased flooding near the damn. And they may lower the oceans ability to absorb greenhouse gases.

I am not an expert on climate, but i wanted to learn about the downsides of all the shitlibs " "GREEN" " electricity generation. Feel free to ask about wind or solars effects, pedes.

BoughtByBloomberg2 1 point ago +1 / -0

So what you are saying is that beavers are pure evil?

It can also create massive wetlands with complex ecosystems for birds to nest and use a migratory stops. It can create a stable river or lake level for less drought resistant fish species.

I concede that old style dams do not adequately deal with silt and impact fish populations that migrate up river to spawn. The solution here is to build a fish ladder and by pass tunnels for the silt and sediment.

Can we take a critical look at the thousands of dams in the country not all of them even known because some are shitty 1800s dams where a bunch of dudes literally just threw rocks in a river till the water stopped? Yes.

Should our first solution be to remove a functional power generating dam? No.

"There are hidden contradictions in the minds of people who "love Nature" while deploring the "artificialities" with which "Man has spoiled 'Nature'". The obvious contradiction lies in their choice of words, which imply that Man and his artifacts are not part of "Nature" -- but beavers and their dams are. But the contradictions go deeper than this prima-facie absurdity. In declaring his love for a beaver dam (erected by beavers for beavers' purposes) and his hatred for dams erected by men (for the purposes of men) the "Naturist" reveals his hatred for his own race -- i.e., his own self-hatred. In the case of "Naturists" such self-hatred is understandable; they are such a sorry lot. But hatred is too strong an emotion to feel toward them; pity and contempt are the most they rate. As for me, willy-nilly I am a man, not a beaver, and H. sapiens is the only race I have or can have. Fortunately for me, I like being part of a race made up of men and women -- it strikes me as a fine arrangement and perfectly "natural". Believe it or not, there were "Naturists" who opposed the first flight to old Earth's Moon as being "unnatural" and a "despoiling of Nature"." - Time Enough for Love, 1973, Robert A. Heinlein

Difference with wind is the government programs pay money for new wind turbines, so when that money expires they dismantle the turbine and build a brand new one for the government paycheck.

A lot of these dams were built in the 30’s as part of corrupt socialist, big government projects during the Roosevelt era.

A lot of them are useless , kill fish, kill the river, and do more harm than good. If you read about the Salmon runs on these rivers before the dams killed them you would be shocked at how abundant they were.

Water behind a dam isn’t doing anything but stagnating. Dams are as much a part of the ‘great reset’ as anything; a government bureaucrat controlling nature (and people) with a touch of a button.

Water in the PNW for irrigation is not a problem as farther south, and straight diversions and smaller dams are better for water needs, than these mega-big government monstrosities.

Dams don’t last forever. Bring back the wild fisheries

39
Defender110 39 points ago +46 / -7

Came hoping for this comment and glad I found it. Fuck dams. Dams are just another green energy gambit that ends up messing up nature more than the alternatives to them. Their usefulness is finite, as they eventually silt up. The river loses its natural flood state and the dam deprives downstream land from being renewed by the silt from the occasional flood. As you pointed out, the effect on fisheries is disastrous.

By the way, I see "conservation" as a keystone of being a conservative. I like my beautiful country and I love wild places. This is what the city people will never understand. Most conservatives from the country have a huge respect for the environment and don't like seeing it messed up.

19
NotProgCensored 19 points ago +21 / -2

Then you need to understand how dams can be built. You fork a river and let the fish run up the bypass. On the other fork a hundred yards or so downstream you build a dam and farm the power. Fucking win-win. On larger dams you get recreational lakes. I live in some steep ass terrain with too much rain in the winter. A mile from me is a dam like I explained and five miles up river is a big ass recreational lake with a dam below it. Water runs downhill, be smart and use it.

If you read about the Salmon runs on these rivers before the dams killed them you would be shocked at how abundant they were.

I call 980% BS on the left's "endangered" salmon claims.
Why?

They are still allowing people to catch and eat these "endangered" fish, and many of the various species were dwindling long before the dams were built. It has been awhile since I've followed it closely, but at one point the government was spending 30 THOUSAND dollars per salmon they were "saving" , and they were still allowing them to be caught and eaten.

A large portion of salmon run activity is dependent on factors

"Salmon fishing on North America’s northwest coast has long been a target for environmentalists. They attacked all forms, including fish farming. In Canada, there was no organization more vociferous than the David Suzuki Foundation. There was no justification for any of the changes. Salmon runs were not depleted by over fishing or declining habitat, as they claimed, but natural fluctuations of numbers due to changing ocean currents and water temperatures. It is a cycle registered in the oral tradition of the west coast aboriginals. When the salmon run fails they experience a period identified as the time of “full stomach”. This refers to the distended stomach of starvation, not too much food. The oral tradition also includes description of changing conditions that preceded the return of the salmon.

In the 1990s salmon numbers started to decline as weather patterns, including temperature, precipitation, and winds, caused changing ocean currents. Conditions, along the coast and in rivers, became unfavorable for returning salmon because of natural changes. The myth is that salmon always return to the river in which they were spawned. It is only true if conditions are favorable. While numbers declined in southern latitudes, they increased significantly in northern latitudes, from northern British Columbia, the Alaska panhandle and Alaska.

Salmon numbers fluctuate like all fish populations, as a brilliant work by L.B.Klyashtorin and A.A. Lyubushin. (Figure 1) show."

The chemical composition of your tires may be affecting salmon runs more than the dams do...

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2020/12/10/bombshell-finding-automobile-tires-not-climate-change-is-killing-west-coast-salmon/

When salmon are taken completely off the menu, is when I will reconsider looking at this.

7
Sumarongi 7 points ago +11 / -4

This is just a dumb tl/dr comment. The fact that our domestic salmon fisheries have drastically declined in the last 100 years due to reckless dam building is just a fact.

A lot of the Salmon we get is very bad quality farmed and frozen salmon imported from places like Norway. I would much rather have abundant, freshly caught wild domestic salmon from our own restored productive fisheries, than the alternatives thank you.

But you can eat zee bugz and be happy if you want

5
Necrovoter 5 points ago +7 / -2

This is just a dumb tl/dr comment

If you can't handle the truth, just say so. I sincerely doubt you have bothered looking into this issue.

The fact that our domestic salmon fisheries have drastically declined in the last 100 years due to reckless dam building is just a fact.

Global temperature and housing prices went up to during that time - must be because of the dams too. By your logic, ice cream sales cause drownings. Don't worry if you don't understand that, you can look it up and maybe, just maybe you will grasp why your "drastically declined" comment is erroneous.

Trust the science!

I would much rather have abundant, freshly caught wild domestic salmon

than electricity? (which is what the OP is about, not about farmed fish).

Please go ahead and post here without using any form of electricity.

3

2

I would rather have real food (not bugz) than electricity.

You can eat farmed salmon, or Atlantic salmon - neither of which is bugs.

take something that God made pretty much perfect

Like natural extinction cycles? Like natural temperature and salinity changes in the oceans which affect salmon populations?

and fuck it up because you think you can make it ‘better’.

Thinking that removing dams will fix salmon populations is "the ultimate conceit".

You are like the city person that tells a farmer that removing tractors will fix their crop yields.

Since you mentioned God, perhaps you should consider this from Proverbs 17:14

"Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out."

The Bible would be against breaching the dam.

Water storage is needed in California. Since it has years of dry seasons. Dams are not being replaced. Most of water infrastructure is older than the 30’s and it’s not being replaced. They are building nothing expect a train to nowhere.

2
Sumarongi 2 points ago +2 / -0

Most of that water ‘infrastructure’ was useless. No part of the Klamath river is used in SF or LA. It’s basically in the PNW

3
TravlingThr0ugh [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Are you sure most of water infrastructure is useless? Since, water is transferred from one side of California to another.

1

1
WowStrongWinning 1 point ago +1 / -0

Even if it were diverted to SF or LA, what gives those people the right to waterways 100’s of miles away from?

Southern California sucks at the teet of the Colorado River which is 300 miles away. Have you seen the water levels at Lake Mead? Californians are sucking the lake dry.

1
Standingoak 1 point ago +1 / -0

More accurately Water is needed in California. Cheap Energy opens many possibilities for getting it.

Dams are just the ancient solution to the issue. There are others.

Most don't know 90% of the Transfer water in Cali is for Agriculture. They haven't done much in conservation (open ditches, flooding , sprinklers) in a hundred years. Largest land owners have owned legislature since the end of the gold rush.

Funny how they always lean on the 10% of use in the cities to conserve though.

1
TravlingThr0ugh [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Water infrastructure in California is based on 19 century tech and so is environmentalism. California hasn’t really built water infrastructure 80 years or so.

Here we have a situation where the constituation guarantees states rights and guarantees interstate transit BUT does NOT provision for a situation like this, where a single state threatens all of the other states around it with this anti American behaviour.

7
DZP1 7 points ago +8 / -1

It's not stupidity, it's deliberate. It's all part of taking the US down. California has mandated no sales of gas vehicles after 2030. That forces electric of course. But reducing the supply of power supply reduces abiity to drive electric. The idea is to force everyone to mass transit, which will be under control of the state. And if you're a bad boy who doesn't vote Democrat, you won't get to ride.

Also, reducing in-state power forces buying power from out of state. Someone is going to make money off this.

3
MarcusAurelius 3 points ago +3 / -0

Electricity prices in California are already insane, with some being as high as $0.38 kwhr.

At those prices, it's literally cheaper, even without government rebates, to generate via rooftop solar + storage. And you don't have to worry about blackouts whenever the Santa Anas.

3
DZP1 3 points ago +4 / -1

You probably have read that Sacramento plans to eliminate tax breaks for home solar. They are definitely insane as well as incompetent, unable to see the consequences of what they do. Or maybe they do see it, and it is planned. Ban gas car sales, demand electric, cut electricity production; force people to mass transit, which gives them control over our mobility and of course they get to tax more to build more mass transit. Fast Trak lane on hwy 237 is $4.20, but the lane was built with gas tax money. No part of this is fair or sane.

I live in this sewer -- This is mid-level Cali fuckery, at best.

If Arkham Asylum was a state...

Their plan is anti-maga. Bring down the American dream with a thousand cuts so they can build back as a totalitarian dystopian nightmare.

Its NOT FUCKING STUPIDITY

BoughtByBloomberg2 3 points ago +3 / -0

Do not attribute to stupidity what is clearly attributable to malice.

Their goal they say is to give migratory salmon a better chance.

Literally just build a fucking fishway next to the dam! It would be a MILLION times cheaper!

Holyscmoly 3 points ago +3 / -0

It’s not stupid when it’s intentional. All part of their plan.

Not just that but the super woke California Coastal commission went against even the wishes of the communist Pelosi's nephew (who is the governor) in voting down a needed desalination plant in Huntington Beach

2
TravlingThr0ugh [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, they have given the run around to the desalination plant for 20 years. It’s retarded—shutting down its nuclear power plants because they don’t do science.

Clean energy!

Save some animal!

We need more taxes for clean energy!

spends the money elsewhere

We need more taxes for clean energy!

Whoa. That is stupid. Dams are the best.

3
ImpregnatingYourDad 3 points ago +3 / -0

no they're not, nuclear is the best, but Cali has been getting rid of those long before this

2
spaceforce_maganaut 2 points ago +2 / -0

This I will support. Leave our great rivers alone, and move to nuclear.

I'll have to admit, anti-water power is a new one to me. Their Teslas will become nothing more than overly expensive street art.

The dams allegedly are obsolete and unprofitable.

If the dams were to remain in place, PacifiCorp would incur more than $460 million in costs for relicensing, operation and maintenance of aging structures that have proved unprofitable, the analysis shows.

link

There is a political struggle among interests who want to use the water. The 6 dams realistically generate only about 80 MW of power. https://www.heraldandnews.com/news/following-the-money-the-klamath-dams-are-a-massive-investment/article_dccd670a-5d21-11e1-bb18-0019bb2963f4.html

Mostly Indian tribes own land along the lower Klamath. Indian's traditional salmon industry is dying. Other Indians profit from farming and reservoirs. Farming interests want water provided by dams. Some real estate prices likely will improve as the river quality improves.

Actual clean energy. Helps out in so many way. Yeah sounds like the evil that runs that state. Can't have anything good that can help people.
