Subnautica Below Zero

Almost got this one, opted for 7 Days to Die first, based on the current thread. Interested in Subnautica next maybe.

I removed this one from my list because of the woke factor.

That and most reviews I read said that if you enjoyed the first game, this will likely be a hit, but that it falls short of the first game in many areas.

If it can't surpass it's own mark, I'm not interested. Still, it would be interesting to see what this board makes of it.

Didn't realize it had pinko bullshit in it. What is it global warming or something?

I know it was either the lead sound or music designer that was let go because of his views.

The lead has also made his stance pretty clear on the second amendment and tries to build games that don't have guns because of school shootings. Like OK.

I've also read the dialogue is shit and the game itself is lacking, bringing almost nothing new to the table other than a reskinned, smaller sandbox.

I think the first Subnautica is the best we're going to get from this team.

I'm rooting for you.

Don't make me downvote my own comment!

C'mon, it's not that bad. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 released earlier this year. There's plenty to talk about.

Edit: Nooooo! Don't downvote yourself!!! If Pac-Man can't win, then Tetris must win.

I haven't downvoted it yet, lol.

Anyone hear about Aliens: Fireteam? Looks like a workable concept but somehow I fear it’s going to devolve into a multiplayer version of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Yep. I made a thread when the trailer was released a couple of months ago. Aliens is one of my favorite movies, so I'd really like it if Aliens: Fireteam doesn't suck.

I just hope they make it scary and not just a generic aliens themed shooter. I want the alien to actually be a threat. Alien: Isolation was a great game because the alien was actually dangerous and not just a bullet sponge that pops up like a range target.

Hard to make something scary that's been in the public consciousness for almost 5 decades at this point.

Unless you totally gimp the lore and the player like Alien Isolation does, I don't think aliens can be done "scarily" anymore.

That's not saying you can't make a very tense alien game, but I think the raw fear left this franchise a long time ago.

A lot of what made the first Alien film scary was that you never got a good look at the creature until the end. Your imagination had to fill in the gaps, and nothing is scarier than the unknown.

When making Aliens, James Cameron knew he couldn't do the same thing because people already knew what the creature looked like. That's why he decided to make it more of an action/suspense film. He drew inspiration from the Vietnam War: with an experienced squad of soldiers facing an invisible enemy that they are totally unprepared for.

"A lot of what made the first Alien film scary was that you never got a good look at the creature until the end. Your imagination had to fill in the gaps, and nothing is scarier than the unknown."

Dallas's death scene is my only real gripe here. The Alien looks like it's a dad trying to scare kids at Halloween. Arms flinging open: "Ima getcha!"

"When making Aliens..."

I love that you know this shit. I love that he wanted to show how technology didn't work. I also love how he concentrated on movement instead of design, that the quick lizard, bug like movement was more important to try and pull off than dressing up the alien suit with more and more slime.

Deep Rock Galactic

I tried playing this solo on a couple free weekends, but just found it kinda boring. I can see how it would be more fun in coop though.

Yeah it seems like a game that wouldn't be very fun solo. I never even tried solo because the whole premise of the game is basically multiplayer oriented. It's a good game for sure, but I just couldn't get into it. The playerbase turned me off I think. Playing with randoms, you get people who kind of aren't noob friendly. I mean they don't call you a fucking idiot or something but they clearly condescend when you don't know some mechanic or the best way to do something or get somewhere.

Yeah I just don't care to play in online cooperative stuff because I have young kids, I want/need the ability to walk away from the keyboard at any moment. So I will try to play anything solo first, and if it's no fun I play something else.

It did seem like some good coop mechanics though, if my wife was interested in FPS games I'd try to get her to play. The lack of quality singleplayer campaign or tutorial seems like it would be a problem for playing with randoms though. I had no idea wtf I was doing, people would likely have been very mad at me, lol.

The game is definitely more fun with a partner or group. It can be played solo if you're trying to fill the time or just level a class, but it's really just a stop gap until you can play with friends again.

I got interested in this to replace L4D2 runs with the woman, as we were getting burnt out on No Mercy and Blood Harvest. It perfectly filled this requirement, and it scales beautifully for the number of players you have.

I'm usually not a fan of games that take a simpler approach to graphics and art style, but this game just oozes charm and really delivers a cohesive package. If I'm telling you not to look at the graphics too hard, it's because this game is a 9/10 in a lot of other areas.

The Pac-Man games. A general thread for all of them, including the Pac-Man World games, and excluding the Ghostly Adventures games and Pac-Man Fever because those sucked ass.

What about a retro game, say pre ‘90, general discussion? So many of these discussion threads seem narrowly tailored. 7 days to die seemed more successful than Valheim, but Valheim had already had a few threads.

🤷‍♂️

4
TrumpWonByALandslide 4 points ago +4 / -0

I agree completely. Discussion threads for a single game as pinned posts are pointless unless the game is currently very popular and well-known. We're already a relatively small community with different interests.

I'd love to see discussions based on era, genre, platform, developer/publisher, or something broad like that.
