Conceptually, it's a total DOOM want a be, and it fails hard.

If the slowed, marauding movement doesn't begin to piss you off by the time you realize your armor accounts for little more than a raincoat, then you are really huffing this games farts.

The whole premise behind this game is that you're one of the ultimate badass's of the Warhammer universe, yes? So then why do I feel like a total pussy while playing this game? Constantly babying my health and wondering why my AI partners act like total special needs.

I even got a chance to run this in eyefinity before I split my monitors up, and while it does add to the experience a bit, it's akin to smearing butter on your toast if your toast were made of pubes.

Where's the meaty heavy bass hits for the weapons? Where's the almost unstoppable god like feeling these fighters are supposed to really have? Where's the "I'll crush anything in my path!" mentality?

I'll tell you where. It's tucked up inside the asshole of some crevice of this corridor shooter labyrinth.

Deep Rock Galactic takes what this game tries to be and goes pro with it. It's almost like they studied what worked and what didn't, and then just kept expanding on what did.

i think you missed the point entirely. the game is not exactly the pinacle of gaming, bugs, single player is a mess, companion AI is shit, mellee doesnt work at all

but if you think it was supposed to be fast and doom like, you really are looking at it wrong. A terminator is a walking tank, its meant to be slow.

its meant for 40k fanboys, and works best as a co-op game, for anyone else, its not going to be worth your time.

every FPS has to be Doom, nope, can't be tactical or co-op like Rainbow Six or Republic Commando, has to be Doom (2016+ of course) or Call of Duty

This is precisely the problem with people having small frames of reference. They can't deconstruct a game down to its mechanics and concepts and how they are executed, only compare it to a popular title.

"but if you think it was supposed to be fast and doom like"

I meant that you get to feel powerful and godlike. Not that the gameplay is fast and floaty.

My mistake if that wasn't clear. I know this isn't supposed to play anything like Doom. But you are supposed to get that same powerful feeling, or at least, I imagine you should.

The problem is that the game is a little too true to the source material: The Space Hulk board game, and the card game based on it, and this here, are slow, claustrophobic affairs where it doesn't matter that you're the toughest transhumans in the deadliest, strongest suits with the best weapons, because these Xenos scum are just as deadly.

If they'd beefed up the squad's abilities and made it more of a slaughterfest, it would have been a lot more fun. I'm HUGE into 40k, and I was disappointed with this one, personally. Got a LOT more fun out of Space Marine, honestly.

"If they'd beefed up the squad's abilities and made it more of a slaughterfest, it would have been a lot more fun."

That's part of my gripe. I don't mind the slow, lumbering, terminator type gameplay, there's plenty of games that pull that off well. This games problem is that it's slow with all the typical FPS tropes thrown on top.

If you're going to make me slow and marauding, then you have to give the armor to match. If your armor is no better than the Doom guy armor, then there's no point to having it be cumbersome.

"Got a LOT more fun out of Space Marine, honestly."

Have not tried this one. Would you recommend it to someone not steeped in the universe or lore?

Mmmm... Maybe. The chief complaints were that the enemies don't have much variety (They're almost all Orks, but the 40k enthusiast can pick out the Shootas, the Nobz, the Mek Boys, etc...) and that the enemies aren't "smart" enough (Ork Warfare usually consists of screaming "WAAAGH!!!!!" and trying to get close enough to use their choppas on ya. All the while, dakka fills the air, mind you.)

But there IS a demo, fortunately, so you can give it a try. And honestly, it's a great introduction to the universe. One of my favorite things about the game is how the melee executions give you more health, so you're never really going to be hiding and worrying about healing up, if you need to heal you're gonna try to shoot that Ork like 2 or 3 times to gimp him as you charge in to saw him down lengthwise. Some pretty great moments where you're just sawing around like a fucking madman when you're swamped, trying not to die as you're constantly brought way down before finding some other poor green sap to turn into chunky bits. I might just have to replay this myself.

I don't think anyone plays the PVP multiplayer anymore, which is a shame as I did really enjoy it way back in the day, but if you have three friends, Exterminatus mode (Waves of hordes, in a 3-stage arena, with an eventual end scenario if you can make it) was fun too.

Now I'm sad that the game never sold well enough to spawn the sequel, as it was originally supposed to be a trilogy...

well no, its supposed to be more horror/horde survival than powerful. the concept is more a ripoff of the original Alien movie rather than anything else. more like left 4 dead or vermintide but in a walking tank suit of armor. You are not invincible, the best gear and training the imperium can offer only provides you a chance of survival. at least in the lore

The game is also much more enjoyable on co-op multiplayer and a harder difficulty, but it still has its problems

Why can't I get more third person action badassery in the warhammer universe? Why is it fucking impossible to play the role of a space marine

MegoThor 1 point ago +1 / -0

Space Marine was a great game. I’d love a sequel.

DigitalFulcrum 1 point ago +1 / -0

Well there was Eternal Crusade but we know how poorly that went. I too am annoyed we only get like one (good) third person action game in a universe about constant war and shooting. At least we have Dark Tide coming up where you're dealing with hordes of enemies and I think Nurgle Cultists.

It would be nice to have another Space Marine shooter being in the front lines of combat like all the art suggest is going on.

I perceived SHD as a digitization of the board game. I only played the boardgame once, and the video game worked better for me than the extremely involved tabletop game.

That said: it was buggy, and I thought the mission design was only good in a few places. I have no idea why melee is so shit.

I just think they should try again, basically. Do a better job. Actually use their own story, which the current game largely ignores LOL.

Oh god, what?

It's not. At all. And I'm not the least bit surprised you'd hate it if that was the expectation you came in with.

To anyone who's played the tabletop version, or any of the previous Space Hulk games, you'd know that it's going to be a slow, plodding, methodical corridor-crawl.

Don't get me wrong, it's definitely a subpar game, but it was never, ever trying to be doom.

I'm regretting the way I typed up this post.

Saw the Doom meme about you being the monster and thought "what other game tries to capture that aspect of an all powerful being slaying dozens of monsters... and fails? Space Hulk Deathwing."

So yes, I know, from a gameplay perspective this plays nothing like Doom. It's not the comparison vector I was trying to make.
