The live action one starring Bob Hoskins? It was definitely weird.

I liked that movie as a kid. Then rewatched it as an adult and realized it was just a 90 minute long Nintendo commercial.

With Jenny Lewis!

Sometimes you just have to wonder how in a project that likely had hundreds of people working on it, every single one of them took a step back, watched it, and said "Yeah, this is good, let's release it!".

Not saying it's bad by the way, to me it falls into the category of being such a fucking fever dream that it's fun to watch with friends.

More like took a step back and believed quality didn't matter because kids were dumber than a brick and would buy anything with the word "Mario" on it.

I remember (and I forget what site it was) some site doing a review "in hindsight" on the movie, and they had an observation that the people working on it clearly were actually putting a lot of heart into it. The set design was incredibly ornate.

Now, is it campy as hell? Absolutely. I feel like Mario is one of those properties I'm relatively neutral about (I wouldn't say I'm a fan, but I don't dislike it either) so I feel like my view of the movie is objective. It wasn't Shakespeare. It was a funny flick that tried to put more lore behind a New York Italian plumber jumping into pipes and eating mushrooms.

And if nothing else, this is where we got the whole Luigi/Daisy thing.

Its literally two hours of Mario saying "Whoop! Yup! Yippee! Woohoo! Maaaama Miiia!" It cost 150 million dollars. It then closes with Lou Albano saying "Ahhhhh, FUCK YOU Luigi." over and over to EDM beat drops.

I heard a rumor that if you don't watch the movie you'll turn into a Goomba.

Okay, this really had me laughing. Poor Luigi. 🤣

Lions has digested the tweet. Hopium: +2.

Just think; if the Mario movie does well we could get other Miyamoto-made Nintendo movies like Zelda and Metroid.

Apparently these guys already pitched a Zelda movie years ago and got turned down.

But who knows?

Hope it's good. As far as Zelda, the last I heard was a live action Netflix series. Hopefully the people at Netflix aren't running it.

I remember hearing that a live-action Zelda series was in development at Netflix, but that was a few years ago. I'm guessing the project has been "postponed indefinitely" which is just a fancy way of saying canceled.

From what I recall, the show was being described as "a family-friendly Game of Thrones."

Looked on DuckDuck, and it looks like it was cancelled. I feel more relieved than disappointed.

Knowing Netflix we'd learn two seasons in that Link was gay and that Zelda was actually a tranny male.

If it's animated it'll probably be fine, for a kid's movie. But I'd rather laugh at a Peter Dinklage with a beer belly, live action dumpster fire.

We already have a live action dumpster fire.

Its going to suck. You can't make a movie off a game almost totally lacking in story, a pitfall that almost all video game movies fell into.

there was a decent anime mario movie in japan only in 1986, by this point the only source material they had was literally the first mario bros game and they made it work by going with a buddy comedy/road trip adventure style story.

Just base it on the cartoons they had for sports on gamecube. Tons of character, very little words spoken.

Scrap the 3D, make it like the original Mario TV show cartoon segments 😁

Any mobile that gets made without being marketed to China has a chance.

and (((they))) have the most creative control, can't wait till they sneak in a gay toad or have the Princess be a frigid girl power bitch while the Mario bros are two buffoons who stumble their way to victory by accident.

I hate hollywood so much
