Remember the days when you would be engrossed in a game? So infatuated with the story that you would play it for hours only to look at the clock and wonder where the time went? It's been awhile since I dived into a game like that, and believe me I've tried. I played fallout 4 and was let down, eventually got bored of the godlike powers I was granted in Skyrim, totally frustrated with the state of Sim City (5), and the list goes on.
Due to lack of internet, and funds I was forced into mobile gaming for a fix and I need not explain the disdain from the "verity" of games I tried to get into and eventually hit a pay wall.
So a friend of mine moves in with a collection of JRPGs. We started on Bravely Default 2. Superb. A throw back to the original final fantasy games that actually feels like a damn final fantasy game! Great engaging story, fun combat, unique class system. I was impressed.
After that was completed I decided to try Star Ocean 5, as I was a fan of the franchise when I was a kid. Again, loved it. Sure the story was a little less engaging, but the combat was too notch. 7 characters on the screen at once was a bit to get used to, but after learning the curve of pausing for heals and spells, and unleashing combos it became fluid enough. Challenging boss fights, and very action packed, I was again impressed.
Then I dug out No No Kuni. At first glance I was a bit turned off. Not a huge fan of pokemon, and playing as a 13 year old kid who looked like he was 6 wasn't exactly gearing me up to play. But I read some reviews and a lot of people gave it high scores, so I gave it a shot. Wow. A masterpiece. Unique combat, brilliant story, and just all out beautiful. I was very impressed. The story was actually unique, which blew my mind.
I was so impressed with the first game I order the second. While I waited for it to arrive I started boarder lands 3... Terrible. Sure, the guns are fun, and the combat is engaging enough. But the story was SOOOOO cringy. I literally would run away from who ever was giving me story so I didn't have to listen to it. I didn't care, I just wanted the next way point to go and blow shit up. Which kind of got boring. I found myself just looting for new legendaries, trying them out, and then selling them when I found something better. Which got boring, and I quit playing it.
Now I'm on to No No Kuni 2, and in 3 hours of play I'm enjoying it more then the 15 hours I wasted with BL3.
I should also point out; I'm not a weebo. I'm not a fan of Anime, or manga, and really could give two shots about Japan. It's just really nice to play a game that has substance, involves more mechanics then just running around killing people, or leveling up to God tier status and having no challenge. And my god, playing a game with an actual original story that makes sense?! Never thought it would happen again.
