What is everyone's platform of choice? PC, Playstation, Xbox, Mobile, Nintendo, retro, etc.

Myself, I end up favoring PC. (Anyone here that also builds computers?)

PC MASTER RACE!

Edit* The switch is pretty fun at times.

BidenCrimeFamily [S] 21 points ago +21 / -0

Haha, that is one Reddit community I definitely miss. Agreed on the Switch. Can be simultaneously the most stressful and most relaxing system to play, depending on the games imo.

I don't miss the Reddit community. Buncha turn coats for a loaf of bread. People been making loafs of bread since the beginning of time without selling out their friends.

The Coof put a kink in their console production pipeline at a time when demand for it has never been higher. That’s starting to turn around though.

I’m wrapping up a 2nd playthrough right now and running through the DLC. It’s one of a handful of games I wish I could experience again for the first time. Just turn on the Japanese voice pack. The English VAs are... well, they tried.

The Zelda voice is so embarrassing and then they used her again in Hyrule Warriors and she got even worse.

Warbeard 4 points ago +4 / -0

Nintendo Switch feels like the most appropriate platform for adults. It doesn't have as many addictive titles as other platforms and it's really easy to put down and walk away from when it's time to cook, or clean, or take a call from your boss, or yell at your kids or whatever.

TTCthrowaway 13 points ago +13 / -0

They made the switch Smash Bros like the old gamecube version. You even can get gamecube controllers. Try it out. Loved it.

PC. You have control of your hardware, and upgrading and OCing is at your fingertips (and your wallet, the only downside,) Plus when not gaming, it is a work machine

13
BidenCrimeFamily [S] 13 points ago +13 / -0

Yeah, I am with you on this. Through remote work, theDonald, and gaming...my own built PC has been my home this past year. Aside from running in the mornings, it's where I spend my time.

ootl?

wtf nosex games? but honeyselect is the biggest reason to go pc over console!

then again...watchdogs2 is the biggest reason to go console over pc

1
Zer8 1 point ago +1 / -0

I love the Watchdogs series. Legion is great and I can't wait for them to open up online play. In that game they have defunded the police and hired a private security force in London. They end up encroaching on personal liberty in a massive and evil way and heros are referred to as terrorists. Sound familiar?

1
modscalledmeacuck 1 point ago +1 / -0

wd2 was too woke and raciallydiverse for me, pre-censorpatch it was literal bbc

10
JoeSlidinsNose 10 points ago +12 / -2

I would argue that consoles are the bigger money drain. You have to keep rebuying those damn things every year or two to stay current. Once you build a PC, you can upgrade one or two parts every several years and be fine. The upfront/entry cost is higher at first, so it's daunting for some.

8
Mackerel 8 points ago +9 / -1

Don't forget you need to pay for online access on consoles, on top of your internet subscription. That adds up cost for each month you use it, compared to a PC and will probably end up costing you around the same as a good PC over a 5 year period.

(Say $500 for the console + $15/m over 5 years makes $900, so $1400 in total.)

Edit: And console games typically cost a bit more, since the console manufacturers take a large cut.

2
modscalledmeacuck 2 points ago +2 / -0

$15/m

wht? oh thts right...xbox got rid of annual, annual is still avail on g2a but when tht well dries goodbye xbox

2
SuddenlyClintoned 2 points ago +2 / -0

Plus, games are typically updated faster and more frequently on PC.

Idunno about you, but developers having the ability to freely fix bugs and add content is huge for me.

2
modscalledmeacuck 2 points ago +2 / -0

on contray, i hate wht tf2 has become, its still goldenvanilla as can be on 360

samething with how halo ce and burnoutparadise and nogenitalia watchdogs2 got downgraded bigtime on pc

PS plus is 60 per year and often goes on sale for 40.

5
MustafaJones 5 points ago +5 / -0

Don’t forget the backwards compatibility. Once you buy a game you can play it forever, no matter how many parts you change out. It’s hilarious having the original Doom and Doom Eternal installed on the same machine.

2
modscalledmeacuck 2 points ago +2 / -0

Once you buy a game you can play it forever

still got to dualboot to 32bit windows to play stuff like ubisofts pod

4
Seanp12 4 points ago +4 / -0

That's why I stay a few years behind current. I got my PS4 cheap because it was already after the PS5 was announced. If I buy a PS5 or Xbox whatever-they-call-it, then I'll do it late in that cycle too.

PC - have to be these days because how am I going to trust Sony and Microsoft to not pull the switch on my system over 'poor online behavior on other platforms' next and just leave me with an expensive brick? I've not seen any such moves from MS, but Sony seems to love playing politics these days.

Afaik Steam is trying to be neutral and stick to just letting games game. GOG lets me backup and play my games in complete offline mode. Worst comes to worst, PC will let me pirate stuff or play my old library.

On top of that, and preceding these concerns by a decade, mods are what make modern games great.

PC is only platform that lets you play with mods. So PC Master Race forever!

19
BidenCrimeFamily [S] 19 points ago +19 / -0

I like that Steam actually stood up for the neutrality and kept some M-rated and weird waifu games. The gamergate people tried to cancel them, but the held out.

15
iamherefortheluls 15 points ago +15 / -0

yeah, that was an actual surprise for me. ugh it annoys me that modern society reached a point where politics has such impact on my hobbies - I can't even respond to a simple question about gaming platforms without either lying, omitting or bringing up politics.

One more thing I love about PC - it's a self-publishing platform now. No censors, and ways to get around cancellation.

I thew money at some sex games I am not interested in playing, just in hopes that it will help a few creators breach censor barriers and pave way for others.

4
Supersurge 4 points ago +4 / -0

That you're not interested in playing... Yet ;)

2
DNA1 2 points ago +2 / -0

They don't. Gaben had a post that stated they'd let consumers decide, but they've went on to ban several games after that statement. If any game has anime aesthetics, it's fair game to get banned at any time -- and good luck getting any support answer from Valve.

Loli? Banned. Highschool students? Banned. College students with ages explicitly stated as 18+? Banned. No nudity at all? Banned! Here are some of the affected titles, varying in cause - https://archive.vn/98zUW

Human actors (Valve employees) are involved and depending on which one passes judgment, a game can be pulled irrespective of its list age. The fact they have a mature category, which explicitly requires being enabled in account settings to find such games, doesn't matter.

Games featuring LGBTQIA? Double standards. An explicit troll "game" about Black Lives Matter? Numerous negative reviewers banned and the game left on the storefront for days despite being a very clear bad-faith provocation.

We need more non-mainstream storefronts and not just for niche games. Meaning not Steam, Epic, Windows, etc. out there that have similar if not identical "ethical standards". Those like DLSite, DMM, Top Hat Studios, etc.

2
Tendies_or_GTFO 2 points ago +2 / -0

I agree with your premise, but I've some to a different conclusion. If you're suggesting that Sony and M$ can ban you from their platforms for 'poor online behavior' yet M$ doesn't have similar power over your Windows license, I'm not sure I agree. I've taken the opposite approach in converting my Windows boxes back to Linux (only moved away for gaming) and going to stick to gaming on an Xbox One for now. My reasoning being that I can afford to have my Xbox account crippled or disabled as all I do on it is game ... my computers double as work computers and I do my banking and everything else online on them. I cannot afford for M$ or Apple to disable or hinder me in any way. If Gaming on Linux was better, I might consider dumping the Xbox. Last time I tried Steam OS and a few other solutions, I remember them being pains in the rear. Anyway, M$ is part of the globalist cabal and right behind Twitter, Alphabet, Apple, and Facebook in trying to control people, I don't want them having access to my information or my machines.

4
iamherefortheluls 4 points ago +4 / -0

I am not sure about windows 10, but I am pretty sure Win 7 can't be remotely disabled. if my legal version goes, I've got pirated cracked versions to replace it.

+1 for having Linux back up to fall back on.

2
Tendies_or_GTFO 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'm going to try Steam again on Linux this weekend. Imagine what M$ could do under the instruction of a Biden administration. Your digital footprint can be obscured or hidden via VPN, Tor, browser extensions and so on ... but your OS? Win10 has it's hooks in everything. I just don't trust it. I just want off of Windows.

2
modscalledmeacuck 2 points ago +2 / -0

win10 already contacts a azure server ootb, disable that and metroapp think u hv no internet(no 5.1audio netflix for you!)

also i thought iphones was our last bastion of ondevice (icloud=celebjihad content team) privacy

1
Benjamin 1 point ago +1 / -0

With the exception of some of the big anti-cheat crap, gaming on Linux is the best it's ever been.

1
Tendies_or_GTFO 1 point ago +1 / -0

Well, I was hoping it didn't get worse. ;)

I know it's improved ... I've been in and out of Linux gaming since 1997 or so (when I was a wee lad). It looks more promising than I expected, actually.

1
modscalledmeacuck 1 point ago +1 / -0

how am I going to trust Sony and Microsoft to not pull the switch on my system over 'poor online behavior on other platforms

Afaik Steam is trying to be neutral and stick to just letting games game.

Not quite - https://communities.win/p/11S0gNqijD/x/c/4DuVQPqhO8P

They're a little better at it, depending on subset of games / genre, than certain storefronts...but that's not saying much IMO.

Mario Odyssey does a good job demo-ing what the hardware does. Super Smash Bros Ultimate is great for a party game. Mario Kart and Mario Party are good for too, especially for kids (my 6 year old cousin loved it).

I grew up with Nintendo, and Pokemon is decent. I hear Zelda is good for it too.

Modded Oblivion/Skyrim is a great time...the mod community never ceases to amaze me with what they can come up with.

3
HoldTheLettuce 3 points ago +3 / -0

I've been thinking about playing through all the ES games.

Messed around in Morrowind back in the day finding all the pillows in the game and then stacking pillow forts, but may actually play for real now haha.

2
DerAlterAmAltar2020 2 points ago +2 / -0

I picked up Oblivion last year but I started looking into modding it and it looked a little overwhelming. Do you have recommendations on where to start?

2
Elvathelion 2 points ago +2 / -0

It is a bit daunting - I started here:

Quick and Easy Overhaul Guide for 2020

That's a good base to build from if you intend on a full modded game. Some people don't care about graphics, etc and can just stick to stability, unofficial patches stuff.

Beyond that base, I added a lot on top of this list myself but highlights:

OCO2 is awesome to update character models.

Really happy with Oblivion Reloaded Lite and Serious HDR configs that enhance it further. (I don't use an ENB)

But Maskar's Overhaul is by far the most comprehensive, stable and well maintained overhaul out there. I use all the defaults but everything can be controlled via ini settings.

2
DerAlterAmAltar2020 2 points ago +2 / -0

Okay cool thanks! I'll start with the overhaul guide and go from there. Mainly I'm looking for stability and some quality of life graphics mods just to make it look a little less dated.

2
meme_cannon 2 points ago +2 / -0

Oblivion is my favorite ES game. I'll probably have to go back through with some heavier modding at some point. I originally played on the Xbox. When I moved over to PC I played through only using quality of life mods like UI improvements and such. I'm sure there's amazing stuff available I haven't tried though with how active the modding community is.

1
Elvathelion 1 point ago +1 / -0

Maskar's Overhaul if nothing else! But the game cleans up graphically really well - some recent and decent guides if you don't want to start cold.

PC + PS5. Kind of regret getting the Sony console, but they tend to have actual exclusives I care about. Hope that changes so I can just stick to PC + long-ass HDMI cable going to my television.

3
BidenCrimeFamily [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

What do you regret about the PS5? Try SteramLink https://store.steampowered.com/steamlink/about/ They also have a SteamLink box that works pretty well.

3
ThisIsMyMagaAccount 3 points ago +3 / -0

I actually do have SteamLink! :) But it doesn't support 4k60 so I've opted for the wired option for now.

My only regret about the PS5 is that it's a Sony product and ever since their HQ moved to California they have slowly been moving towards more censorship on localized releases. Just doesn't sit well with me.

2
BidenCrimeFamily [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Ah gotcha...yeah the only one I know of that supports that is Nvidia Gamestream, but the Shields are much more expensive.

Makes sense! I totally agree with you there...I always liked the games though.

6
DerAlterAmAltar2020 6 points ago +6 / -0

I'm either on Xbox or PC. Xbox was mainly for Halo for a while (and I didn't have a PC that could run games beyond Civ V).

3
BidenCrimeFamily [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Well at least the Halo series was released on PC. The old ones are surprisingly ported well to run on some older machines.

1
modscalledmeacuck 1 point ago +1 / -0

wht are ure thoughts on how halo has devolved over the yrs? BRING BACK BULLET TRAVEL

nojoke, i didnt evn know abt halo when i got my 360, i got it just cause of the burnoutrevenge demo on the 360kiosk in the mall, my introduction to halo was actually the halo2 vista port on my centrinoduo mobilityradeon laptop(played a pirate copy tht wasnt cracked so u only could play the 1st level, loved it so much i bought the dvd just for multiplayer), then h3 cameout and i pretty much didnt play anything but halo(apart frm odst) and i stayed to halo5 which was when i got checkedout and realised this franchise has run its course

1
DerAlterAmAltar2020 1 point ago +1 / -0

It's honestly really said since I played Halo: CE a long ass time ago and have read a large portion of the books even. Halo 4's campaign was fairly entertaining and could have gone an interesting direction, but then they did the whole Cortana thing and then the Halo 5 campaign was a joke. Honestly if Infinite isn't good I'll be done with the franchise games for good. My biggest worry is it's going to be another Destiny where you get a small campaign then have to buy a shit ton of DLC to get the full story.

I’ve been playing the Ori games, State of Decay 2, and tried No Man’s Sky for a while. The Outer Worlds series is supposed to be really good. I’ve heard it’s like Fallout New Vegas in space, which is fitting since Obsidian’s folks made New Vegas as I recall. That one’s on my list. I never actually finished Skyrim because every time I pick up one of those games I go around stealing and hoarding all available items from all containers and opportunities.

Not open world, but I also played through Doom Eternal, Touryst, and most of Carrion. So far I’m in love with Game Pass. I like buying and collecting physical games because I can buy them for less than I can sell them for if I ever wanted to, but Game Pass is amazing. I don’t feel compelled to complete a game if I don’t want to, either, and can try out quite a bit stress free.

1
PhatAttack 1 point ago +1 / -0

2
JoePCool14 2 points ago +2 / -0

Smash Bros Ultimate. Awesome game with tons of fan service. Not to mention you get hundreds of songs to listen to. With the DLC packs it gets pricey, but it's more worthwhile than other Nintendo offerings for the system.

1
JasonHudsonCIA 1 point ago +1 / -0

Great game but the online service is pretty bad so unless I have friends over I haven’t really played it. Is the single player worth it?

2
JoePCool14 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'd say yes. It's not as fun alone, but there's enough extra content to keep you entertained for a while. Again... More than other Nintendo $60 purchases.

Right now an Xbox one X, I’m trying to get a series X though. The PS5 looks okay, but with Bethesda becoming a Microsoft owned company I can’t see myself buying one.

I’d get a PC but they just feel like a rip off at this point (for gaming), you can’t get one as strong as the newest consoles without spending at least double. If I needed one for work it’d be different, but it just seems stupid to pay more for a worse machine. I know it’s because Microsoft and Sony both sell at a loss (and get parts cheaper), but it doesn’t change the fact that a good gaming pc will be at least $1k.

I used to always buy them all at launch as a kid, but it’s hard to find time to play games now so I just stick with PS4. I wasn’t planning on upgrading anytime soon but my PS4 just gave me a scare with a blue blink of death, so I might have to get something new. Was thinking about a PS5 but might just invest in an upgradable PC.

Windows

I've been thinking of getting an RG350 for use on the subway.

I had a GPD Win. It broke. I thought about a newer model, but can't justify the price with the lousy build quality.

PC orginally and then switch to Xbox when I had a kid. Now he has a PC and I’ve been playing on Stadia with my MacBook Pro. Want to check out Xcloud to see how they compare.

It’s crazy to me that the streaming game services work as well as they do. You do need a low latency connection with good bandwidth, but it works like magic. Just works immediately, no install, 1080p/60fps, no input lag for me.

XBOX ONE - I held off after their initial callous announcement that it would not be backwards compatible, but I caved when I wanted to play Skyrim modded and they had the most mods.

I've never played Skyrim (or any Elder Scrolls game, for that matter), but my interest is piqued as I see it was recently added to Game Pass. I don't normally like huge open-world RPGs (they're just too time consuming), but I did, admittedly, like The Witcher 3. Does Skyrim still hold up?

I’m mainly a PC Gamer, been playing PUBG after taking a long break from Rocket League. I got to Champ and hit my max so I decided to move on. I also love playing Switch with my kids

I'm on Xbox One. Trying to get the Series X but no luck here in Florida. There's such a massive shortage of stock here. Ik it's bad everywhere else, but it seems especially bad here.

PC and PS4.

I dip my toe in the Oculus pool as well.

I built my own computer about 5 years back and use it exclusively, mostly because I game so infrequently now.

PC, though I also own PS4 Pro and Switch. Not sure if I'm going for a console this gen or not. Sony sucks, don't need Xbox. Is Nintendo even releasing anything new?

I got an Xbox one for most games and online, but the switch and nintendo and general make the best single player games and i will defend this to my death. Nintendo can't do online for shit tho

Due to my financial situation ive been forced to play mobile games (I've been working on my debt). I do have a laptop that I've been playing indie games on, but I tend to get bored of them after playing for a few months. The latest mobile game I'm actually enjoying is Elona Mobile. It's a dungeon crawler that plays like a roguelike (soft version) that has a lot of other skills like cooking and farming. There's no restrictions on playing, as in you don't need stamina that refreshes 1 every hour to play levels.

My list of things to buy after I get over my debt has a PC rig at about number 5 or 6. I'll get there eventually.

I built my PC about 5 years ago to play GTA V. Other than that I enjoy playing on the Nintendo Switch. PD MegaMix FTW.

I’m a PC guy. Just built a new rig with a 3080 but I can’t get the Ryzen 9! So sad. ;)

PC but there's a special kind of zen mode when playing God of War with a controller. Need to find a PC equivalent sometime.

PC, Xbox, and Switch. I've never had a Playstation all my life for some reason. lol

I am sort of an idiot. I own 3 Nintendo Switches (2 for the kids), and 2 PS4s as well as Xbox One. I don't like PC gaming for some reason. I keep my PC seperate for writing books I will never publish. Lol you would think I am a hardcore gamer, but I am pretty casual. I just don't like tv as compared to games.

PC and Switch are the standbys for me too. PC is the main course, but I have to get in on Nintendo's first party releases.

I prefer games either on PC or Switch for versatility. I only buy games for my PS4 if I can't get them on the other two.

I'm also not buying a next gen console until much later. I did that with PS4 and spent way less money than if I had bought the system and games when they launched.

PlayStation. By far the exclusives I care about most. Breath of the Wild was great for a Nintendo game, but other than Mario Kart I don’t care for the Nintendo exclusives.
