The lack of tool using ability amongst the 40 & under set is frightening. You can trace it back to the mid 80s when school manual arts programs (car, metal & wood shop) were being shut down due to "liabiity" concerns. Replaced by computer science class which supported the planned service economy to come. By the early 90s wholesale closure of factories and the rampant rise of Mexican maquiladoras accelerated the loss of skills you could gain in a manufacturing job.

And in the background, China. Granted conditional most favored nation status in 1980 then unconditional in 1991, they tooled up and undercut any surviving US manufacturer on tooling, parts, sub-assemblies, and finally finished articles. Worse is the majority of 40 & under have zero understanding of what's neen stolen from them. So many cannot use tools or do simple maintenance. They farm out higher order jobs to "professionals". We have a high mountain to climb back up.

Well stated.

It doesn't help that cars and other devices are intentional manufactured to required specialized tools and equipment to maintain. Not to mention being "Smart" and Fragile when in previous generations they were Dumb and Reliable.

It's definitely an uphill climb.

It's the overt reliance on digital vs. analog systems. I am not a Luddite but the bundled complexity just to allow basic vehicle operation is staggering. Everything flows from the OBDII port. Even simple oil changes require a reset tool to eliminate the alert symbols on your dash. For most that means taking it to the dealer and not the independent mechanic. It's insidious how people are being herded.

"If only everyone would...." solutions are doomed to failure because not everyone can and not every that can will and not everyone that will should.

Part time farmers don't cure cancer. Specialization is important and we absolutely shouldn't throw it out when we decouple from the evil of globalization

Sorry but the rifle handling in this picture makes me hurt of his foot and the gun.

It’s a nice sentiment but we’d have a per capita GDP roughly equal to the Congo, and the only question is whether Russia or China would step over our corpses to rape our continent first.
