Are local hardware stores like Home Depot, Lowes the best option? Or are there online stores with better prices? Any brand preference?

Not many options anywhere at the moment unfortunately. Big box stores will likely be your best bet, unless you happen to have a friend or family member that can get you contractor pricing at a local building product wholesaler.

My Father's Trex deck built in June of 2009 repeatedly molded/mildew. Trex recommended a specific cleaner that actually bleached the deck. I'd stay away unless they changed something in the last 12 years.

I prefer certain lumber yards over others, I'd recommend TimberTech Azek, over Trex.

Check out your local supply places... Everyone calls the shit trex, but that's the same as calling tissue "Kleenex"...

If you end up going to Menards get the 2nd tier stuff. 1st tier doesn't have a laminate coating on top.

Prior to current lumber prices, I normally advised people to not go the composite route... & I'll tell you why:

2 years ago when I did a 20x16, picture framed with top of the line aluminum railing (stairs had two sections of railing so it had to be max 12' hypotenuse)... I calculated that it would take 20 years to break even vs using wood and paying someone else to power wash and stain it...

Even then, the composite fades. Or, at least all the older stuff does... They claim newer stuff doesn't but it hasn't been around long enough to really know... (They sell stain for it, to remedy the problem, believe it or not)

The other thing is- say you want to build an addition onto your deck? That product line may be gone by the time you do it... So your new stuff won't match unless you reskin the whole thing... Freaking nightmare
