Damn. You must love your nephew! Thats about $1000 of wood in Biden's America!

In all seriousness, those look super cool. Wood toys are way under rated these days.

Well... wooden hammer may be not such toy only. You know, it is something between metal hammer and elastic hammer from rubber. For example - bodywork for some cars after some small crash... (Of course those for bodywork have usually another, more cylindrical shape).

Haha, I know! I just checked out the Homeless Despot and 2xs were going for 3 times what they were last year. My fiancee wanted to build a $20 table she saw in a video, and I had to tell her that it was going to be more like $50, minimum.

And yeah, parents don't buy toys that are made to last. I finished these with boiled linseed oil and homemade paste wax (basically the standard James Wright finish), same as I do for my own tool handles, totes and knobs, so they'll need a bit of care over the years, but he should be able to pass them on to his own kids in a couple decades.

Also made a try square, speed square, a crescent wrench and another wrench, but I don't think we can upload more than one picture per post

Ooooooh! Those are great. My boys love playing with toy tools. Real ones, too, if they can get ahold of them. These are much better than the plastic junk from china. Well done!

Thanks! He's the same way: I tried to drive some nails with him with a small hammer a couple weeks ago, and he does alright with a small pilot hole, but he kept grabbing at the hammer when I was starting the nails, and almost got his fingers smashed. I told him we had to stop, but I figure these are a lot safer for future play.

I'm also planning on making a bunch of wooden nails and screws out of dowels and plugs (I've got a tap and die set for 1/2" dowels), and maybe a couple small bolts for the wrenches. Cheers and God bless

Nice. I like working with poplar over most other species. My house is actually trimmed out in poplar!

whats your plan for stain and stuff? Idk how old this young man is but, even I might give those a taste test.

I put a coat of pre-stain conditioner on the handles (really, everything that would be wood) and then a walnut stain, which, when cured, should be perfectly safe.

Beyond that I put a heavy coat of boiled linseed oil on (the real stuff, nothing with chemical hardeners) and then homemade paste wax (BLO and beeswax that I sourced from my fiancee's neighbor). It's all food safe, although he's about to turn 4 and just past the "everything is food" stage.

And thanks, haha. Under the right light that poplar looks damn good

My niece wanted wooden toys, trucks like the Amish make & sell, for her son. So I bought him some trucks from them a couple of years ago. He's just turned 5. They still look great, and he just showed them to me a couple of months ago. Still right there on his shelf in his room, not even just tossed in with the "toys". They will last till IF he ever has kids (not sure at this point, sadly). I'd buy a set of those tools for him if they were for sale. I wonder if the Amish make anything similar? They are really so special. He'll realize that one day. That's a lot of time, effort and love you put into those, for him, and you did a beautiful job.

Thank you so much, fren! Yeah, there's something special about handcrafted wooden toys that you really don't get with cheap Chinese garbage. Glad to hear that it sounds like he cherishes the trucks.

I dunno the best way to handle something like this, but I wouldn't mind making you a set for a reasonable price. Dunno if they'd be the same quality as legit Amish craft, but you'd be helping out a fellow pede. God bless, bud

It's ma'am! LOL, sorry, you might remember that video. Every time somebody calls one of us a guy . . . I can't help myself. But about the tools, for sure! If you have enough spare time to want to do that, pls. DM me and we'll figure it out. Thanks so much!
