Welcome to the first General Animal Questions megathread!

Just to introduce myself, my name is Wolfgirl and I am a mod alongside u/SimianDespot for c/Animals! I have an emotional support registered cat named Mimi (she is a diluted Tortoiseshell cat) who I got from the shelter last year, and a dog named Buster (He's a purebreed Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog) who we got as a puppy 7 years ago.

What is this thread for?

This thread is for asking any general questions such as care help, animal suggestions, tips, sales going on for new pet owners... anything animal question related!

How long is this thread up for?

Every Friday one of the mods will be replacing the sticky with a new question thread, and link back to the prior one... in case your question may already be answered.

Thank you for posting all of your lovely animals, it is so great to see all your amazing pets and creatures in the world! ❤

To start off with, if you're looking to buy a new tank for any fish or reptile, I would suggest waiting until the $1 a gallon petco sale for a tank. I got my 5 gallon fish tank for my old beta fish for $5 with that sale; I was able to buy more things to decorate my tank with (rocks, statues, etc.) with the money I saved.

Since the pandemic began lots of people started chicken keeping. So I wanted to bring up some hatchery sources for people to peruse. Chick season has started at some of them and the dates for some rare breeds go really fast so no time like the present to get your order in. I've ordered some Turkeys, Geese, Ducks, and Chickens to add to my current flock of Chickens and Ducks. Hatcheries I've ordered from: https://www.cacklehatchery.com/ <--- look at the very popular Surprise box. https://www.meyerhatchery.com/ https://www.metzerfarms.com/ <-mostly waterfowl offered https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/index.html

Others I have not ordered from so not able to answer questions: https://welphatchery.com/ https://www.idealpoultry.com/ https://hoovershatchery.com/

Feel free to add to the list I provided to help us all prepare for what may come down the road from this crazy time in the US.

I have a new daschund who is totally uninteresting in toys. I want him to learn to entertain himself for when we won't be home all the time from covid. I've tried a couple of different types of toys and even cut into a tennis ball and filled it with beef treats but no success yet.

How do I get him to learn to play with this stuff?

Is there something he really loves to eat? My dog wasn't interested in toys either, but we found he LOVES sweet potato. We ended up giving him some treats, and putting some mashed sweet potato on top of different toys.

My dog also seemed to love rope toys and balls if we threw them. We would throw the ball, then run to the ball and get all excited about the ball so he would get interested... then give a treat when he would come over and praise. But other toys he kind of ignores still, he's just not really into them. He's really into treats though, like bully sticks.

I've got GSD/Bordie Collie mix who doesn't care for toys. My other dogs will play right in front of her and she will just sit there chilling.

Some dogs just don't care. As long as they're not destroying anything while you're gone, then I wouldn't worry about it.

The only thing that could interest it is the Kong toy where you can put treats in it. That'll keep'em busy for a while.

Have you tried a Kong?

Hi WolfgirI . I wish I'd known about this thread 6 days ago. My little dog was sooooo poorly. She's getting better now so fingers crossed.

She's literally not eaten since last Thursday night, only had probiotic paste from the vet and my 'electrolyte soup'. She seems to be getting her appetite back. Just simmering chicken and rice to up to more solids. Do you have any suggestions for ingredients to break her in gently to solids proper? Thank you.

I would suggest Sweet Potato/Pumpkin, mashed with no butter or anything. Easy on the stomach and good for diarrhea if that happens.

sweet potatoes + pumpkin is high in fiber, which helps regulate canine digestive systems.

Just make sure they're cooked

I am moving to the gulf side of Florida late next month and am seeking a cat myself when I am landed and secured in Florida. Tampa area. I prefer to take on a rehome or shelter cat of this type:

These pictures are of a rehome cat in Maryland and I cannot do the logistics taking on that cat with my move, so am waiting until I am there in FL.

My question is if anyone is familiar with rehome or shelter places or sources in that region?
